Stretch ceiling materials: PVC film or fabric?

PVC film vs fabric at a glance
General characteristics. The exact properties depend on the specific product, so ask for its documentation.
| Aspect | PVC stretch ceiling film | Fabric stretch ceiling |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A thin, flexible PVC film | A woven or knitted polyester textile, usually coated |
| Finishes | Matte, satin, gloss/lacquer, translucent, metallic and printed | Mostly matte; printed and acoustic versions available |
| Installation | Usually warmed during installation so the film can be stretched taut | Generally installed without heating |
| Large seamless areas | Wide areas can be joined with welded seams | Wider rolls in many systems, so fewer joins |
| Wipe-clean surface | Smooth, easy to wipe; a common choice for kitchens and bathrooms | Dust and spot-clean gently; follow the maker's guidance |
| Backlighting | Translucent films designed for backlit ceilings | Translucent fabrics also available for light diffusion |
| Acoustics | Micro-perforated films with absorbent backing | Often used for acoustic and textile-look ceilings |

Choosing by room and finish
Kitchens and bathrooms
A wipe-clean PVC film is the usual choice, with good ventilation.
Kitchen and bathroom ceilings →Gloss and mirror effects
Only lacquer PVC films give strong reflections.
Glossy stretch ceilings →Backlit ceilings
Translucent PVC films or fabrics spread LED light evenly.
Backlit stretch ceilings →Echo control
Micro-perforated films or acoustic fabrics with absorbent backing.

What to ask about the material

Material questions
Which is better, a PVC or a fabric stretch ceiling?
Neither is better everywhere. PVC film offers the widest choice of finishes, including gloss and translucent, and a wipe-clean surface. Fabric suits large seamless areas, textile looks and many acoustic or printed designs. We recommend one based on the room and the finish you want.
Is a PVC stretch ceiling suitable for a bathroom?
PVC film is a common choice for bathrooms and kitchens because its surface is easy to wipe. Good ventilation is still essential, and we confirm the membrane proposed for your room in the quotation.
What should I ask about the membrane in a quotation?
Ask for the membrane type and finish, the profile system, and the documentation available for that material — such as fire and emission test reports and the warranty terms — so you can compare quotes on the same basis.
Can the membrane be printed?
Yes. Both PVC films and fabrics can be UV-printed. Very large images may suit fabric or a PVC layout planned around seams; we check your artwork's resolution before printing.
Not sure which membrane suits your room?
Send us photos and tell us how the room is used — we'll recommend a material and finish.
