Comparison guide
Stretch ceiling vs POP and gypsum false ceilings
POP and gypsum are built on site; a stretch ceiling is made to measure and stretched into place. Here's how they compare — including where POP and gypsum still make sense.

Side by side
| Aspect | Stretch ceiling | POP | Gypsum board |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it's made | Membrane fabricated off site to measure, stretched into profiles | Plaster applied and shaped on site over a frame | Boards screwed to a metal grid, jointed and finished on site |
| Mess on site | Low — no plastering or sanding | High — wet work, dust and drying time | Moderate — cutting, jointing and sanding dust |
| Finishes | Matte, satin, gloss, translucent, printed, acoustic, 3D forms | Paint; hand-sculpted details | Paint; flat and simple profiles |
| Lighting | Fittings, light lines, full backlighting, RGB and stars | Fittings and coves | Fittings and coves |
| Cracks and repainting | No painting; the membrane doesn't crack with the plaster | Can crack with movement; repainting over time | Joints can show cracks; repainting over time |
| Water from above | Fix the leak, then the membrane can often be serviced | Stains and may weaken | Boards can stain or sag and need replacing |
| Physical damage | Can be punctured by sharp objects | Can chip or crack on impact | Can dent or crack on impact |
| Changing colour later | Requires a new membrane | Repaint | Repaint |

When to choose each
Choose a stretch ceiling when…
- You want backlit, printed, gloss or 3D effects.
- You want to avoid dust and wet work in an occupied space.
- You need to hide an uneven slab, ducts or wiring.
- Your old POP has cracked or stained and you'd rather not demolish it.
POP or gypsum may suit when…
- You want a simple painted ceiling on a tight budget.
- Your design depends on hand-sculpted plaster details.
- You expect to repaint the ceiling a new colour yourself.
Questions
Is a stretch ceiling more expensive than POP?
It depends on the finish. A plain stretch ceiling and a detailed POP ceiling can be comparable, while backlit, printed or 3D stretch ceilings cost more. Ask for a written quote for your room.
Can a stretch ceiling be installed below an existing POP ceiling?
Usually, if there is enough height — the old ceiling can often stay in place.
Which lasts longer?
Both can last for many years when installed well. Ask us for the written warranty terms that apply to the membrane proposed for your project.
Replacing an old POP ceiling?
Send photos of your current ceiling and we'll tell you whether a stretch ceiling can go below it.
